Turbulence (1997)

- written December 1999

Ryan Weaver's days of killing have ended, or so we think. Arrested and convicted, Weaver is being transferred over the X-Mas holidays. Teri Halloran is spending another lonely night working as an airline stewardess, once again dumped by a boyfriend. Once the flight starts, the fun begins. Weaver and another convict (Stubbs) are being escorted happy Correctional Officers, but after Stubbs does his best to get loose from his shackles, life gets awfully interesting. After killing most of the officers, Stubbs and Weaver have themselves a showdown with Weaver winning and trying to then portray the aura of a victim himself. But Weaver isn't as sweet as he claims. He wants freedom as much as the next convict but he knows once the plane lands, he'll be back in custody and blamed for more deaths. His idea: Crash the plane. But Teri isn't ready to give up yet and she must do all she can to save herself and the other civilian passengers, including landing the plane with the help of the Air Traffic Control Tower in Los Angeles. But Weaver knows how to have a good time and he won't stop until he's dead. Question is, who many more people will join him.

Overall: Decent film with some good action. Weaver is trying to be a Ted Bundy with good looks and a great personality, but unfortunately no other actors help him do this. The plane is way too empty for the Christmas Holidays and essentially the movie delves into a cat and mouse game over a way too damn big plane. In real life, this story either fails or is 1 hour faster on any ordinary Southwest Airlines plane, and really this plane only survives due to it being a 747, double-decker with a cherry on top. Cool film though.
