The Blob (1958)

Steve Andrews and current main squeeze Jane Martin are atop a hill when suddenly they witness a comet fly across the sky and crash in the nearby woods. Meanwhile a local resident who lives right next to where the meteor landed investigates the strange phenomenon. He finds the crashed rock and inside he discovers a round squishy substance. It soon engulfs the old man, later a doctor and soon will go after the whole town. Only Steve knows what to do but convincing everyone of impending danger won’t be easy.

Overall: This is one of those films that although classic in the 50’s, hasn’t aged well. It is a slow film with sub-par effects that basically has too much dialogue. It doesn’t help when the main characters are supposed to be teenagers and yet Steve McQueen was 28 and co-star Aneta was 25. And they look their ages too. No question for me...born in 1970’s...that the remake from 1988 was the superior film. I had no expectations for this film but it really was slow, plodding and didn’t have much going on with the creature anyway. We saw more running around, talking, running and talking, then have the blob just sit over this diner ready to eat a few people, as hundreds stare at it, doing nothing. Why didn’t the blob go after everyone else, who wasn’t protected?
