Psycho (1998)

Phoenix officeworker Marion Crane is fed up with the way life has treated her. She has to meet her lover Sam in lunch breaks and they cannot get married because Sam has to give most of his money away in alimony. One Friday, Marion is trusted to deposit $40,000 by her employer into the bank. Seeing the opportunity to take the money and start a new life, Marion leaves town and heads towards Sam's California store. Tired after the long drive and caught in a storm, she gets off the main highway and pulls into “The Bates Motel.” Once she checks in, the owner will make sure she won’t check out. But Marion’s actions have ensured that Norman is gonna have a few more visitors…

Overall: The first film was pretty good, especially for the time period. It’s scary had great angles to create tension and definitely gave new light to mental illness. The newer version tried to be a copy shot by shot. I rarely like remakes unless technology has so advanced to make it worthwhile, such as “13 Ghosts.” This film was a bad idea for a remake. Biggest reason, there’s no one good enough to either direct or star in it. Anne Heche has her own issues to be believed. Vince Vaughn hasn’t been in big enough horror films to be credible. Gus Van Sant was coming off of a film that he isn’t responsible for its success “Good Will Hunting.” So the film was doomed from the start. Watching it, just reminds you why Anthony Perkins and Alfred Hitchcock were so awesome. As the scenes went by you keep remembering the original and the film then just drifts away with you wanting to shell $4 out to blockbuster. So, let’s hope no one tries this again 38 years from now.
