Mimic (1997)

- written November 1999

A childhood epidemic has hit New York City hard and nothing seems to be able to stop it. No cure, no vaccine, no hope. But the Centers for Disease Control's (CDC) Dr. Susan Tyler thinks they have answer. They combine termite and manta DNA in order to create a new insect, called the Judas Breed, that will breed with disease carrying cockroaches and kill them off through mating. 6 months later, they are able to call their project a success and life goes on. But 3 years later, our bug doctor starts to find some weird stuff. Some kids bring Susan a bug they found in the subway - bigger than most and just as ugly, Susan discovers this bug is too similar to be like the Judas to be coincidence. Once she begins to investigate with her boyfriend and CDC compatriot, Peter, and police officer, Leonard, they begin to find terrible things are happening. Even talks with her colleague Dr. Gates make this situation look worse and worse with each day. That is until the bugs, now 6 feet tall, catch her. The boys go for the rescue but all isn't what it seems, and even the prospect of one of them leaving alive is dim. But Susan has a few tricks up her sleeve and she won't die without having one last hurrah!

Overall: Very decent film with awesome effects. With this film and "The Relic", 1997 proved to be the beginning in a great transformation for cheesy horror into great horror. These special effects scary films help usher in the demand for "Scream" and "I Know What You Did Last Summer," which are making films like "Sleepy Hollow" and "The Haunting" possible. The film can give one the creeps and those without a love for insects can find themselves even more affected by the idea of 6 foot flying insects attacking you. Definitely a rentable film.

Comparison: Food of the Gods meets Hybrid
