THEM! (1954)

After several people in the New Mexico desert wind up dead, the police and FBI investigate and are shocked to find gigantic ants, whose mutations were caused by the first atomic bomb explosion nine years earlier. They manage to destroy the nest of ants, but not before two winged queen ants have hatched and escaped the nest. Now they the US Government has to find the creatures before the breed and destroy the entire continent.
Overall: This is regarded as one of the best “Sci-Fi Monster” films out there. I’ll agree that could be ranked so high for its era because as cheesy as the summary above suggests, it does have a good story. They try and back up their claims with lots of science and even more character development. And at a time where people still wondered about the effects of the tests, this provided a definitely possible occurrence. Unfortunately films such as “Eight-Legged Freaks” and their effects put films like this to shame, you can count on this film being one of the few from the decade that backed the effects up with a plausible plot.
