Paul Sheldon is well-known author and at this moment has crashed his car in the New England woods on a snowy day. Annie, a local resident and his “number one fan” comes to his aid and starts to take care of him. However she’s a bit more rabid of a fan than he is used to and when she finds out what his new book is gonna be about, concerning her favorite character, she decides that he’s not gonna leave until the book ends, how she wants it to end.
Overall: Frankly, this really is one of the better movies out there. A tremendous performance by Kathy Bates that took her from “no-name” status to “big-time star.” The dialogue is great, the story is realistic and frankly, the performances by everyone are stellar. I think as good as the book was, the minor changes made for the screen were ok. 2 minors flaws: 1) The scene where the sheriff hears from Paul’s agent, the sheriff says “I’ll give you a call” but never gets her number. 2) Annie and the typewriter at the end – even at regular speed, you can tell it isn’t Kathy Bates. King’s books are always great (IMO) and the movies usually fall far short. This one did not. Comparison: Desperation meets The Fan |
