A serial killer is loose again but this time he’s doing all his killing for Jesus. John Prudhomme is having a rough life. His son is dead, his wife is bitter and he’s on the track of a serial killer. John and his partner Hollingsworth find the first body, which had been dead 4 days. It is missing the right arm. After being yelled at by other officers and their boss they found out at the coroner’s office that not only had the victim been alive at the time but also that there were some roman numerals etched in the skin. Also a key etched in the skin of the victim leads them to the local Botanical Gardens where another body is found (missing his left arm). As each body is found, different parts are missing and soon the police realize the killer is constructing a body of dead parts for himself. Also they begin to realize all bodies have names of apostles and that the numerals correspond to bible numbers as well as the fact the victims were all 33 and had jobs similar to the apostles. Obviously you can guess where the connection is going to lead you. Then the FBI Profiler comes in but he seems to know a bit too much about the killer but no clue how to catch him. Then as the killer counts down to the finale, he finally begins to take from Prudhomme’s family and friends and Prudhomme isn’t about to let that happen. But like the Zodiac Killer, will he complete his masterpiece and simply vanish or can the police catch him before he finishes?
Overall: This film just reeks of rip-of from the film “Seven.” The opening scenes when they find the first body are exactly the way “Seven” begins (in the rain). The partner to Prudhomme was in “Seven” and also they have a giant scene where they finally seem to catch the killer by accident and like “Seven” there is a long chase and the killer gets to beat on the partner of the main officer. (In “Seven” it was beating of Brad Pitt who was the sidekick to Morgan Freeman) Also like “Seven”, the plot here also deals with the Bible and religion (“Seven” being the Seven Deadly Sins and this dealing with a recreating of Jesus). Finally the method of murder with the motive is significant because the way they die has meaning. The similarities go on and on so much you’d think this was a sequel. By itself it does have a unique quality, that being the exhibiting of intelligence on the part of the killer. You watch the film and when you find out who done it, you realize the killer is perhaps not as crazy as previously thought. That is the new genre for serial killer films. Most don’t try to show an intelligent killer but instead simply a psychopath who has mental problems. Interesting film but it’s a straight up copy. Comparison: Seven meets Ben-Hur |
