Horror of Dracula/Dracula (1958)

After Jonathan Harker tries to kill Dracula at his castle, but in vain, the vampire travels to prey on Harker's fiancée. The only one who may be able to protect her is Van Helsing, Harker's friend. But Lucy is soon about to become the prey to Dracula so if Van Helsing doesn’t work fast…it may be too late.

Overall: Frankly the movie although trying to put the book “Dracula” into video form messes with the plot sooooo much, you might as well not even bother figuring out what they were up to. Many people feel that this is/was one of the best Dracula films out there, but if that was the case, then Bram Stoker himself would be rolling over in his grave and not have stopped until he rolled into Hollywood and started slapping everyone around. Bottom line is that Van Helsing and Dracula do battle and when all is done, there is a sequel to this film. The movie is very slow and makes no sense half the time and just when u were begging for Dracula to turn into a bat and fly away…he doesn’t.

So this film is so admired as being scary or the first real film by Hammer Studios. And all that is fine, given the context. Fact is, in 2003 this film can only be seen as being quite inferior to vampire films since 1958 and although a nice start to this wonderful genre that are horror films, the fact is, the film is slow and not true to the original story. We have Cushing, Lee and a few other biggies but the 1992 version is better!
