Kiss the Girls (1997)

Detective Cross is an experienced serial killer hunter and this time, the killer has gotten personal. Cross’s daughter has been kidnapped in North Carolina by a “collector” – a serial killer nicknamed Casanova who prefers to hold on to his victims rather than kill them, which he will do if necessary. But as difficult as it will be to catch this one, there’s a 2nd killer to be worried about. Seems Casanova has a friend in Los Angeles doing the same thing and the FBI thinks they are competing with each other. Det. Cross must use all his skills to try to catch them, but he’s got an ace in the hole – Kate McTiernan escaped from Casanova’s Lair and she just may have the right knowledge to get the job done.

Overall: The film is just ok but the book is better. In the book, the link between the 2 killers is developed from the opening page. The film really tries to go for suspense but I think the book still keeps it despite letting a lot of information out early. The book also develops an interracial relationship between Det. Cross and Kate, which the film doesn’t even allude to. I still have trouble accepting who Casanova is, due to his job. With as often as he is stalking women, patrolling his lair, where does he get the time to earn his money? Don’t miss Mena Suvari in this film. And go find the prequel, Along Came a Spider, the story of how Cross got to be as good as he is.
