Deep Rising (1998)

- written September 2000

John Finnegan is just trying to make a good living by transporting mercenaries from place to place aboard his boat. But this group is a bit different – they want to attack the world’s greatest ocean liner and make a killing. But also interested in killing is a mysterious entity which can’t help but eat the liner’s passengers’. When all the mercs, the kidnapped boat captain, and his 2 friends get aboard the liner, they find it practically deserted and blood everywhere. They eventually get picked off one by one and must figure out the weaknesses of a centuries-old monster that was previously undetected in order to survive.

Overall: Seeing this in the theatre I had to agree that this was easily one of the worst films ever. Bad storyline, easily unrealistic and extremely poor acting. Looking back a few years later (released 1/98 and reviewed 09/00), I give it a few extra nods towards mediocrity. The effects are fairly good and if anything, that is enough to make the story. Kevin J. O’Connor isn’t too bad at all and provides the humor in the story. Famke Janssen definitely shows why she has talent and absolutely no clue how to pick good films (she has also been in “Relentless 4” and "I Spy"). Oh and “Amistad’s” Djimon Honsou is also making an appearance.

In response to his review of “Deuce Bigalow 2 : European Gigolo,” the famed film reviewer, Roger Ebert decided to name his all-time worst films. This film made the list. Here is what he said:
The owner of the ship (Anthony Heald) makes several speeches boasting about how stable it is; it can stay level even during a raging tempest. I wonder if those speeches were inserted after the filmmakers realized how phony their special effects look. Every time we see the ship, it's absolutely immobile in the midst of churning waves.
