Halloween (1978)

- written April 1999

One the of the premier horror films of all time. A young boy at age of 6, Michael Myers, dresses up as a clown for Halloween and kills his sister, Judith. That as 1963 in Haddonfield, Ill. We jump 15 years to 1978 when Michael Myers escapes from the mental hospital in Smiths Grove, Ill. Dr. Loomis, his psychiatrist, (played by Donald Pleasance) is on his way to visit Michael when he notices the escape. Loomis then sets out to Haddonfield knowing Michael is on his way there. Michael adds a mask and eventually notices that Laurie Strode is baby-sitting that night and after all seems calm, he attacks. Laurie (played by Scream Queen Jamie Lee Curtis) is baby-sitting Tommy Doyle and her friends, Anne and Linda, are either baby-sitting little kids or their boyfriends. Michael wrecks havoc throughout the town and then goes after Laurie. The closet scene is epic!

Overall: One of the better and scarier horror films out there. I think with the lackluster sequels, the excellence of this first film has been diminished. Nevertheless it is the key that started other horror series such as A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984, 6 years later) and Friday the 13th (1980). The film made Jamie Lee Curtis and John Carpenter - in fact everything since this film has just ate away at the genius of Carpenter. Death Count = 4.

Comparison: The Thing meets One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
