Kevin and Rachel have just moved to “The Hill,” a nice neighborhood in the outskirts of Los Angeles. It’s not just a home they’ve purchased; it’s more like a way of life. Everyone is friendly and does things together and quickly these two newcomers are taken into the fold. However Rachel is called away to do a job on the East Coast and when she returns, everything has changed. She’s become the outsider and Kevin has grown discontented with her. It doesn’t help that Rachel has had some mental problems in the past and so when she starts to hallucinate, she can’t tell if it’s her or the house. Problem is…it could be both!
Overall: I received this screener and given the quality of the stuff I usually come across, I was much impressed with this film. The DVD itself had a lot of extras, including my fav: deleted scenes. As for the movie, it was better than I was expecting, as I was not a big fan of “Last Broadcast.” But also, I think the story is fairly concise and although there are not many true answers to what really is happening, the fact is, it’s supposed to be like that and we get enough to whet our appetite. I really enjoyed the idea of “Tom Mix” and the old west. Today’s indie horror films don’t tend to be very imaginative but to pull a name like “Tom Mix” out of the box was quite clever. The effects were probably the weakest part of the film and even then not all the effects were below caliber but there were a few cheesy ones. I did like the effects at the end a lot though with the black and white silent stars. I do think the film could have been better than it was. I was fine with the deleted scenes but I do think, if anything, we should have gotten more effects of ghosts and faces and such. At times you could go a good 15 minutes without anything reminding you that the land might just be haunted with additional tenants. However, this is definitely film to go catch and enjoy. Now I wonder what Stefan Avalos can do with a bigger budget. Comparison: Sunset meets Rosemary’s Baby |
