Evil Dead 3: Army of Darkness (1993)

- written April 1999

Ash is back, and this time, boy, does he have an attitude. Ash has been transported back to 1300 A.D. He is found by Sir Arthur's army and suspected of being a member of the enemy camp, ran by Duke Henry the Red. Sir Arthur's men toss Ash into the "pit" where there lies an evil demon. They do battle and of course Ash's "boom-stick"gets the better of the fight. Ash wishes to get home and the old wise man of the village says he can do it. All Ash must do is find the Necronomicon (Book of the Dead) and the spells in there will do it for Ash. But to find the book, Ash must go into a graveyard and battle the Deadites. Ash says "good bye" to all, including a nice woman, Sheila, and battles the demons who pose as evil Ash's. Can Ash say the correct words to bless the Necronomicon or will he screw it up and therefore summon the Army of Darkness?

Overall: Yet again Raimi screws with the story he did so well with in "Evil Dead". The movie really gets much weirder than the first two by starting with flashbacks to Ash's days as a supermarket clerk. They then go to flashbacks with what should be part 1 or even part 2 of the series, yet they switch girlfriends for Ash for the 3rd time (this time played by Bridget Fonda). In fact, they even changed the ending of part 2 also. The special effects are very weak and border on being the worst ever (can't ever beat "Darkman" though in my opinion). The movie makes Bruce Campbell into the cult icon he has now become and does create for him great one-liners and a biography only a teenager would enjoy (a target employee who saves the world). The special effects really are terrible but you must love those one-liners. Finally, after the first 2 films where the demons seemed to be conquered by Ash with some ease, but in this film Ash has to use shotguns that have literally 15 shots in them and even then the demons can't die. The series has completely bottomed out at this point so see it only to finally get your fill of Bruce Campbell.
