Dracula II: The Ascension (2003)

Medical students in Louisiana have uncovered the remains of a vampire and after contacting their medical professor for assistance, take the body to a safe place. Once there and after having been contact about a $30 million reward, they proceed to wake Dracula up with a bath of blood. But once awake Dracula will try and tempt these friends into betraying each other and hopes to do so before a vengeful priest kills everyone. Who is the real bad guy?

Overall: The film has some good effects and a decent story. Although they claim the location was Louisiana, the fact is that I’ve been to Romania and immediately recognized those houses and streets. (You can also tell where a movie is shot but looking at the lesser names of the casts and the casting director – names ending in “escu” are Romanian and not popular in the U.S.) It was a shame that they had to get a new actor for Dracula – I liked the guy from the first film. The rest of the cast is filled with also-rans and once-good actors with no popularity (Craig Sheffer, Jason Scott Lee & Rob Scheider). The film continues on from part 1 further giving us some good twists into the ideas of Dracula and what Drac does towards the end in trying to save his own life, further shows us that there are some good story-writers left in Hollywood (or Sigisoara as the case may be). Nothing too exciting in the deleted scenes and although leaving a few of them in would have made the film a bit tighter, their absence wasn’t really that noticeable.

Comparison: Pelican Brief meets Dracula: Dead & Loving It
