Dracula 2000 (2000)

Van Helsing is a collector or old relics but the greatest collection is in his safe – a safe seemingly untouchable, until a few up-and-coming thieves decide to break in, thinking it is lined with gold. But they don’t find gold, they find a coffin. Still thinking it contains treasures the remaining thieves board a private plane with their booty, but not before a few choice booby-traps in the vault shorten their numbers. Once aboard, the body of Dracula arises from the coffin and eliminates the remaining thieves, crashing without a pilot into the swamps of Louisiana. But this crash is not a freak accident but planned as Dracula knows he has a child out there and he wants a reunion. Van Helsing is eager to stop Dracula but he doesn’t know how to kill the great Romanian. The secret of Dracula’s spawn and Van helsing take a turn for the worse upon Dracula’s revealing of who he really is!

Overall: I gotta say that the story is damn unique. The secret to Dracula is most original I’ve heard yet and I won’t spoil it now. But I do suggest watching it – I would say that the dvd does include “extended” and “deleted” scenes and they should be kept in the film. In fact, I think the story without them is weak and full of holes. The scenes on the dvd definitely help and it’s a shame the producers couldn’t get the scenes in. By the way what was the point with the tv reporters? Were they really necessary? The story wouldn’t have suffered had those characters been eliminated!

09/2005 - So i wrote the above back in 2001 and with the release of the 3rd film, some new info has come to light. Seems that the director had the character of Father Uffizi (used in the 2 last films) in this script. And to quote Director Lussier:

"He was originally written in Dracula 2000, but he was written out because the studio said he was too cool- how's that for note?" he observes quizzically. "But when it came time to do a sequels they really wanted him in there, so using him as kind of where we left off with the character and trying to figure out a way to get into him."

Well frankly I think the film was correct not to have that character in it. This film is more thought provoking and style driven rather than the 2 sequels which focused on action and fighting. The character would have been out of place. And to show you how "out of it" Lussier is...He felt Rutger Hauer was the best "Dracula" of the 3 films! Patrick...still can't get anything right, eh?
