C.H.U.D. (1984)
(Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers)

The Reverend is a sort of public relations officer for those who can’t help themselves. But lately his crowd has gone missing and he’s getting truly concerned. He makes a quick trip to the cops who just happen to be looking for him. His concern for the homeless underground people isn’t a lone cause. 2 rogue reporters and a police captain are also interested. Soon their interest will forge an odd bond that will shake the pillars of government. A cover-up like this can’t last long, not when mutated creatures are ready to rise to the surface!

Overall: I waited 18 years to catch this for the first time and I was a bit disappointed. The film wasn’t that cheesy and boasts a strong line-up (John Heard & Daniel Stern from “Home Alone,” Patricia Richardson from “Home Improvement,” John Goodman & Jay Thomas). I think the big problems is that it didn’t follow through with its strengths. In the footsteps/time period of “Class of Nuke ‘em High” & “Mad Max” the film has a strong story between various groups of city folk and the government project to dump nuclear waste underneath New York City. But the film didn’t do enough of focusing on the Chud’s – we get lots of info on what was happening but little to no attacks by the Chudians (except for video below). I think the story was too much about 1 or 2 bad government guys and not enough focus on the photographers. It has too many mini-subplots and not enough true focus on the main story: mutated people. Ending was clearly “sequel” motivated and not only did the 5 people mentioned above get somewhere in their careers but 3 other minor actors got parts in the opening season of “Tales from the Darkside.”

Comparison: Of Unknown Origin meets Class of 1984
