The Butterfly Effect (2004)

Evan has not been having a good life. From age 7 to 20, he has hung out with the wrong crowd, seen his friends and himself get hurt and unfortunately he has had some many blackouts, can’t remember much of what has even happened. However one day while reading his old journals where he used to write his trials and tribulations, he discovers he can go back in time and fix what went wrong. However doing this also alters his reality. The more often he goes back to fix things, the more screwed up things start to get. Soon Evan will realize he’s gotta figure out what he must sacrifice to make it all go away.

Overall: I was not really excited about seeing this film because frankly, I’m not a Ashton Kutcher fan. So until I ended up with a copy of the film and a deadline to watch it by, I’d probably have skipped it. And I’d have been sorry – this was a really decent film. Some really good ideas in the film and well done with the “butterfly effect,” a.k.a. this is “Chaos Theory” in action. Make one change and see how everything is different. And...once the first change happens, he can never go back to how it used to be. As for the director’s cut alternate ending, without giving it away let me just say: I don’t think it is better or anymore “connected” to the Chaos theory than the original ending. It is a very interesting way to do it and I’d have seriously given the director “props” had they let it end that way in theatres. Either way I am ok with the endings. I liked the original because of what he chose but either way he realized he was the problem and for everyone to be ok, he’d have to distance himself.

          Comparison: Timecop meets Donnie Darko
