Anacondas 2: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid (2004)

- written April 2005

It is the jungles and swamps of Borneo where a special flower called the Blood Orchid resides. Apparently in scientific texts, this flower has shown the ability to prolong life. All this struggling company and their executives need to do, is go get more of it. However they were running out of time, as it only blooms every 7 years...for 2 weeks and it’s already started. Once a team of researchers makes it out there, the trouble has only begun...a bunch of anaconda snakes have been feasting on the flowers for years and so they’re a bit unusually large now...and not excited about sharing.

Overall: Seriously, admit that the only reason you watched this film was because of the title! If this film wasn’t billed as a sequel, no one would have seen it. We’ve had bunches of giant snake films since the original film so why another one? To top it off, the other films always had a b-list actor...the first film having tons of a-list actors. This film had basically nothing. Bunches of nobodies. So why feel the need to make it? Well “Boa vs. Python” was straight to cable-tv so without the title, this film maybe goes straight to video? Or nowhere at all? It’s not a bad film. Got some nice scenes, nice ideas...trips over itself with the “few weeks left” stuff. Frankly once you find out where the flowers are, what lives near them, then I question how the original research team failed to give anyone a heads-up on the location of the flowers in terms of the dangers. The biggest flaw the film has is the cast. It’s really a bunch of nobodies and early on every character seems to come off looking in a bad light...you’d almost rather the snake kill all of them. 2nd flaw...the snake. I thought that the original snake looked bigger, better and scarier. These snakes looked long but not “big” and just weren’t that impressive. As for the deleted scenes, those do actually add a tinge more substance to the film...including the scene as the team finds another rare and exotic flower. I agree with the deletion as it doesn’t help the story to find the orchid, but I also think how does that team recognize a rare flower from 100 yards away, by sight...on a whim.
